I recall your minds back to February of this year, when Doug Lowenstein said, during his final speech as president of the Entertainment Software Association:

"The publishers and developers who make controversial content and then cut and run when it comes time to defending their creative decisions... Nothing annoys me more. If you want the right to make what you want, if you want to push the envelope, I’m out there defending your right to do it. But, dammit, get out there and support the creative decisions you make."

Doug warned us about the long term consequences of not standing up for our creative freedoms; and how the spineless and gutless among us who cave in now will curtail artistic freedoms for the rest of us.

How precient he was. A few months later, instead of leaping to the defence of their peers suffering as a result of the Manhunt2/Resistance/NY legislature pro-censorship moves, we now have all these developers scurrying back into the studio to cut the naughty bits out of their games, just in case. This is what we call "self-censorship" and is every bit as bad, if not worse, that open state censorship.

It's every developer for him/herself, it seems. Fucking pansies, the lot of them.

Today in CVG:

"I worked on [Indigo Prophecy] and had to cut the sex scenes out of the game for the US*… It sucked because I don’t believe in that, right. But you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.** We’re working closely with the ESRB to make sure everything goes through okay but there’s stuff we’ve cut already. There were things we were doing that even I couldn’t believe we were going to those places.***"

PATHETICK

This gentleman here - a character from Condemned 2 - also thinks it's PATHETICKKK

New ESA president Michael Gallagher seems to be remarkably quiet through all this, doesn't he.

* When I played an internal beta of this game the sex scenes were still interactive ;-) (Have I just broken an NDA? Ooops!) Kudos to the design team at Quantic Dream . More of that please!!!

* *I believe they also said that at the Nuremberg Trials, but whatever.

***What - you're a producer on this game and you've only just played it? What a fucking disgrace.
